The Story Behind
It was a wonderful and fascinating journey; I was particularly moved by the prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri with its extraordinary frescoes. I was inspired to create four plates, each featuring different pictorial references to the frescoes, and each coloured distinctly to reflect four symbols of Greek history and culture.
Brown represents the earth, the first goddess, Gaia, the mother of all gods and the source of all life.
Green symbolises the olive tree, vital in Greece’s history and culture for its live-giving olives and oil.
Red represents history, as its the colour of the pottery, the amphorae of the ancient world, which often depicted important historical narratives.
Blue represents the sea and its role in transporting food, culture, and ideas throughout Greece’s history.
All the plates share a unifying element: gold, which symbolises olive oil, connecting all the elements. The olive tree (green) grows from the earth (brown), its oil is transported in pottery (red), and it travels across the sea (blue).
This dinnerware set is rich in character and symbolism, weaving together the story of Greece’s deep and vibrant history.
The Plates
Brown – the soil, earth and Mother Nature
Green – the olive tree as a symbol of life and peace
Red – history through the ancient amphorae
